The Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS) wishes to express its total condemnation and deep concern over the French Government's decision to endorse the recommendation put forward by the Stasi Commission. The recommendation that Muslim girls should be denied the right to wear their headscarves at school is outrageous and is a breach of internationally recognised human rights.
“Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to manifest their religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance” (Article 18, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights).
FOSIS would like to raise the question- what next? We watched in horror as the UK became the only European nation to have suspended article five of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prevents arbitrary detention without trial. Now, we are faced with France preventing the freedom of manifestation of belief.
Is this the first step for France? Will this ban be extended to the workplace? Will it soon be a crime to offer prayers in what is deemed public space? More worryingly, is this a first step not in French history, but in European and world history? Will other countries follow in their steps?
FOSIS has had numerous British Muslim students contact them to raise these concerns. Students are being asked to choose between their faith and their education. A person’s right to practise their faith and their right to education can not be set against each other. Indeed, not only does this lead to a mockery of the recognition of the fundamental human right of freedom of expression, but it also undermines the fundamental principle that education is a right: a right that should not be denied based on a person’s practice or beliefs.
FOSIS is deeply worried by statements supporting the recommendation: that it is an acceptable move to prevent tensions between communities. Such comments contain a disturbing undertone of racism, prejudice and intolerance. It is only when people can respect and understand differences that tensions fade and social cohesion is strengthened. Diversity is essential to the development of a vibrant and forward-looking inclusive society.
FOSIS would like to support students of all faiths and beliefs in France in their struggle against this inhumane policy and we ask our fellow British citizens and Government to declare that such blatant breaches of human rights are unjustifiable and must be revoked and thereby reassure the minority groups of Britain that the diversity they bring is not simply tolerated but respected, appreciated and indeed a welcomed component of British society.
